2D vs 3D vs 4D vs 5D: What’s the Difference
Every ultrasound has its own charm—
here’s how they compare.

-
Prenatal ultrasounds are an essential part of a healthy pregnancy journey and regular visits to maternity professionals such as an OB/GYN are vital to the health of mommy and baby.
Parents-to-be often visit the Little Buns Ultrasound studio because we offer a more personalized and intimate experience compared to a doctor's office. Unlike medical settings, the Little Buns studio is designed to create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, allowing parents to enjoy high-definition images and videos of their baby in real-time with their family and friends.
We do not offer diagnostic services. Please continue to see your maternity medical professional.
-
We understand that life happens! If you need to cancel your appointment, refunds will be issued for cancellations made at least 24 hours in advance. If a cancellation occurs within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment, a credit will be applied to your account for future use.
Thank you for your understanding and support!

At Little Buns, we specialize in noninvasive transabdominal ultrasounds—that means all of our scans are performed on top of the stomach, using gentle gel and a handheld probe to capture beautiful images of your baby.
We do not currently offer transvaginal ultrasounds, which are performed internally and typically used in medical settings for very early pregnancy or diagnostic purposes.
Our focus is on creating a cozy, celebratory experience for families using safe, external imaging. Whether you're here for a heartbeat check, gender reveal, or keepsake 3D/4D session, we’ll guide you through every step with warmth and care 💕
-
At Little Buns, we know hearing your baby’s heartbeat is one of the most magical milestones of pregnancy. 💓
A baby’s heart begins beating very early, but it’s usually around 6–7 weeks that we can start to see that tiny flicker on an ultrasound.
By the end of the first trimester (around 11–12 weeks), most families can reliably hear their baby’s heartbeat during a session.
If it feels a little too early at your appointment, don’t worry—every pregnancy is unique, and sometimes baby just needs a little more time to grow before that sound comes through clearly.
✨ Either way, we’ll walk you through the process with patience and care, making sure you feel reassured and celebrated every step of the way.
Thank you for your understanding and support!
-
Yes, each of our sessions include physical prints (the amount depends on the package you choose). Along with the physical prints you’ll also receive a digital link of all images and videos from your session.
-
Yes, we have 8-15 weeks listed as a recommendation, but you are more than welcome to book this package at any stage of pregnancy. In later trimesters, the Bun In The Oven package is a great option for families who are interested in hearing babies heartbeat, checking their position, or for peace of mind at any stage! This session is performed using traditional 2D ultrasound.
-
It depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy. In early pregnancy (typically before 14 weeks), a full bladder can help lift the uterus and improve visibility during a transabdominal ultrasound. That’s why we may ask you to drink water before your appointment if you're in the first trimester.
As your pregnancy progresses and amniotic fluid increases, the uterus naturally rises into the abdomen, making it easier to see baby clearly—so a full bladder is no longer necessary for most ultrasounds after the first trimester.
-
First—congratulations! Whether you’re still soaking it in or already planning baby names, this moment is big. Here’s what to do next:
🩺 1. Call your OB or midwife
Schedule your first prenatal visit. Most providers will see you around 8 weeks, but some may want to confirm earlier.
📅 2. Calculate how far along you are
Use the first day of your last period to estimate your due date. Not sure? That’s where early ultrasounds can help.
🧬 3. Start prenatal vitamins
With your Dr’s guidance choose one with folic acid to support baby’s early development—especially the brain and spine.
🍼 4. Consider an early ultrasound
Many families book a bonding ultrasound to catch the first glimpse of baby, hear their heartbeat, or just celebrate the moment. At Little Buns, we offer cozy, transabdominal elective scans starting around 7 weeks.
💬 5. Ask questions, feel supported
It’s normal to feel excited, nervous, or totally overwhelmed. We’re here to help you feel informed, reassured, and celebrated every step of the way. Check out our resources page and start building your support village today.

First Trimester Ultrasounds (Up to 14 Weeks)-
Drink up! A full bladder helps lift the uterus for clearer images. Try drinking 16–24 oz of water about 30–45 minutes before your appointment.
Wear comfy clothes—we will need access to your lower belly.
14 Weeks and Beyond-
Hydration helps! Staying well-hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment can improve image clarity.
No need for a full bladder—your growing uterus and amniotic fluid do the work!
Eat a light snack 20 minutes before if you’d like baby to be active (fruit or juice works wonders).

A digital link will be sent to either your email address or phone number on file. Simply open the link and download all images and videos within 90 days, before it expires. If the link expires before you’re able to download everything simply give us a call and a new link can be sent.
-
Absolutely! We encourage you to bring your loved ones to share in the excitement of seeing your bun in the oven. Our comfortable viewing area can accommodate up to 10 family and friends. We also have a toybox in the ultrasound room to help keep little ones entertained.
-
We don’t have a dress code at Little Buns—come as you are, and we’ll make it work with whatever you’re wearing 💕 That said, here are a few tips to help you feel comfy and confident:
We’ll need access to the lower part of your belly, so outfits that are easy to lift or slide down slightly are ideal.
Two-piece outfits (like leggings and a tee) are super convenient—no buttons, no fuss!
If you’re wearing a dress, we recommend shorts underneath for your privacy and comfort during the scan.
Skip the buttons if you can—they can get in the way and slow down the cozy vibes.
Whether you’re rocking sweats, a sundress, or your favorite maternity fit, we’ve got you. Your comfort is our priority, and your style is always welcome here ✨
-
It depends on the type of service you are looking for. We start ultrasounds here around 8 weeks gestation. For gender determination we recommend scheduling an appointment starting at 16 weeks of pregnancy. When coming for a 3D / 5D ultrasound session to see baby's features, the ideal time is between 26 and 34 weeks, when your baby's facial features are more defined and they still have a little wiggle room.
-
No, you do not need a doctor's referral to schedule an appointment with us. However, we do recommend that you inform your primary healthcare provider about your decision to undergo an ultrasound session.
-
Our boutique specializes in private elective ultrasounds. This includes gender reveals and 5D technology that captures detailed images of your baby's features during pregnancy. We offer a variety of sessions captured with 2D, 3D, 4D, and 5D / HD ultrasound. Please note: The accuracy of gender results is not guaranteed until 16 weeks.
-
No way! We charge per session, not per baby—so whether you’re expecting one little bun or a whole basket, the price stays the same 💕
That said, we do recommend booking a slightly larger package if you're having twins or more. It just gives us extra time to thoroughly show each of your little ones, capture those sweet sibling moments, and make sure everyone gets their spotlight ✨
We’re here to celebrate your growing crew with love, laughter, and lots of “aww”s—just let us know you’re expecting multiples when you book so we can plan accordingly!
-
A gender reveal ultrasound is a service where we use ultrasound technology to determine and display the gender of your baby. It's a joyful moment for expecting parents to find out if they're having a boy or a girl.
-
At Little Buns we understand that not every family wants to know the gender of their baby before they arrive. When booking your appointment, we have an option to let us know that you prefer to keep the gender a secret until birth. Our techs can still provide an enjoyable experience without any spoilers.
-
"Baby's features" ultrasounds are sessions where we focus on capturing detailed images of your baby's facial features, fingers, toes, and other visible aspects. This allows you to see a sneak peek of what your baby might look like before they're born.
-
Yes, we offer various packages that include both gender reveal and "baby's features" ultrasounds. Check our website or contact us for more information about package options and any ongoing promotions. Follow us on social media for all upcoming events and promotions.
-
A standard ultrasound session usually takes around 20-40 minutes. However, the exact duration can vary based on factors such as your baby's position and cooperation during the session.
-
Yes, ultrasound procedures are considered safe for both expecting mothers and their babies. Ultrasound technology uses sound waves, which are not harmful like the radiation used in other medical imaging procedures.
-
It depends on your provider and pregnancy journey—but here’s a general guide:
🩺 Medical ultrasounds
Most OBs or Midwives schedule:
Dating ultrasound: Around 8 weeks to confirm pregnancy and estimate due date.
Anatomy scan: Around 20 weeks to check baby’s growth and development.
Additional scans: May be recommended if there are concerns or special circumstances (like twins or high-risk pregnancies).
🍼Elective Bonding ultrasounds (like ours!)
These are optional, cozy, and all about connection. Families often book:
Heartbeat confirmation: Around 6–8 weeks
Gender reveal: Around 16 weeks
Face & movement scans: Between 26–32 weeks for those magical 3D/4D/5D views
At Little Buns, we offer boutique-style ultrasounds that complement your medical care—giving you extra chances to bond, celebrate, and see your little one grow in real time.
-
Our ultrasound office specializes in gender reveal and capturing the baby's features. We do not provide comprehensive medical diagnostic services. It's important to continue regular prenatal care with your healthcare provider for detailed health assessments.
-
At this time, Little Buns Ultrasound is a self-pay boutique offering private, elective ultrasound experiences. Because our services are designed to be non-medical and purely for bonding, celebration, and keepsake purposes, they unfortunately are not covered by insurance and cannot be paid for using HSA or FSA cards.
-
Our ultrasound techs were formally trained at accredited ultrasound schools in Arizona. They bring over 6 years of combined scanning experience to ensure the best visit for you and your family.
-
We first opened our doors in Scottsdale, AZ in October 2023. Due to the support and response from our community, we’ve recently expanded to a larger, more conveniently located space in the Phoenix/Ahwatukee area.

Usually those first fluttery movements—called quickening—are felt between 16 and 22 weeks. It might feel like tiny bubbles, gentle taps, or even popcorn popping. If it’s your first pregnancy, it may take a little longer to recognize those wiggles. If you’ve been pregnant before, you might notice them earlier.
🧸 What affects when you feel kicks:
Placenta placement: An anterior placenta (in front) can cushion kicks, making them harder to feel early on.
Body awareness: Some people are more tuned in to subtle sensations.
Baby’s personality: Some little ones are mellow; others are mini gymnasts!
At Little Buns, we love helping families see those movements during bonding ultrasounds—even before you feel them. It’s a magical moment when baby’s wiggles go from invisible to unforgettable.
-
Most expecting parents begin to “show” between 12 and 16 weeks, but it varies widely. Your bump’s debut depends on a few things:
🧸 Factors that influence when you show:
First pregnancy? You might show a little later—your abdominal muscles are stretching for the first time.
Been pregnant before? You may notice a bump earlier, since your body’s done this dance before.
Body type & posture: Everyone carries differently, and that’s perfectly normal.
Baby’s position & growth: Some little ones snuggle deep, others stretch out early!
Even before your bump is visible, your baby is growing fast—and bonding ultrasounds can help you see that magic long before you feel it.
At Little Buns, we celebrate every stage—from “Am I showing yet?” to “Look at that beautiful bump!” with ultrasounds that blend science, warmth, and boutique charm.
-
Yes—in most cases, exercise during pregnancy is safe and beneficial! Staying active can boost your mood, ease aches, improve sleep, and even help with labor and recovery. The key is to listen to your body and check with your OB or midwife before starting or continuing any routine.
✅ Safe, bump-friendly activities:
Walking: Gentle and easy to do daily
Prenatal yoga or stretching: Great for flexibility and stress relief
Swimming: Relieves joint pressure and feels amazing as your bump grows
Light strength training: Helps maintain posture and muscle tone
🚫 Skip anything that includes:
High risk of falling (like skiing or horseback riding)
Contact sports or intense impact
Lying flat on your back after the first trimester
Overheating or pushing past exhaustion
At Little Buns, we celebrate every stage of pregnancy—including the strong, glowing, active ones. Whether you’re walking, stretching, or just dancing in your kitchen, movement can be a beautiful way to connect with your changing body and growing baby.
